Risk Assessments

A risk assessment is used to systematically identify, control and review all of the risks associated with a task, activity or process.

A risk assessment must be undertaken prior to the commencement of activities at the university where there is a reasonable risk.

Risk assessments should be undertaken at various times, including:

  • If the task has not been attempted before;
  • When a hazard has been identified;
  • When a change in the workplace may introduce or change a hazard;
  • As part of responding to a workplace incident, even when an injury has not occurred;
  • When new information about a hazard becomes available or concerns about a hazard are raised by workers;
  • At regularly scheduled times appropriate to the workplace.

For example some activities may include (but not limited to): commencing new work, research, teaching, operating plant and equipment, events, travel and fieldwork.

For more information on risk assessment please refer to the Health and Safety Risk Assessment Guidelines and the Health and Safety Responsibilities Procedures.

All University risk assessments are to be completed through the C.H.A.R.M online risk assessment module.

The online risk assessment module allows all University risk assessments to be accessible to staff and students at any time in one University wide location.

Risk Assessments of a confidential nature can also be completed through CHARM by answering 'Yes' to the Restricted Risk Assessment question located on the first page of the risk assessment.

Confidential risk assessments have a restricted view which are only visible to the Risk Owner, Risk Approver, invited users and the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Department.
